When the graves are overturned

The word بعثر is translated as “overturned.” At its root, it means for something to be

overturned in such a way that its highest point is made its lowest and vice versa but in a disorderly manner. 54For example, if you have a bag containing many things inside it and you are searching for one tiny object inside it, you will take out all the other objects inside it and throw them away until you find what you need. This is an imagery associated with this root.

This root is closely related to the root بعث which means to raise and the Qurʾān has used this root for the opening of graves on judgment day as well. There is only one slight difference. The word used in this ayah, بعثر has the letter rāʾ with it, which is a

letter associated with swiftness. This denotes that this invasion, overturning and destruction of graves to bring out the human beings, will occur swiftly and quickly.
