Commentary covering verses 21–23

This goes back to the present, to the ungrateful man. Notice the word ‘yet’, what is this referring to? Allah is not referring to a specific man but to all ungrateful men who consider themselves free of need. Who assume they do not need religion, or God. No matter who this person is, where he is, what his race or color is, if a person has this trait inside him, of deeming himself self sufficient and without need, he will not have completed what Allah commanded him to, regardless of what stage of life he is in. This is why the word ‘yet’ is used. As long as this quality is in you, you have not fulfilled Allah’s rights on you, The initial interjection ‘No!’ is a call to desist from this behaviour, so man can finally fulfill what Allah commanded him. The next passage will tie the whole surah together.
